In 1980, the Buckeye Trail became a loop which is familiar to hikers today. But before the loop was completed, several people walked the entirety of the existing Buckeye Trail.

Post-Loop Buckeye Trail Thru-Hikers

From a 500 mile trail from Lake Erie to Cincinnati in 1970, to a 1200 mile loop in 1980, and later the current 1450+ miles with the Wilderness Loop in 2005, the Buckeye Trail provides a challenge for backpackers and hikers attempting to complete the entire trail. Because of the circular nature of the Buckeye Trail, completing the entire BT is referred to as a Circuit Hike. Several people have completed their Circuit Hike of the entire Buckeye Trail as a thru-hike in less than one year.
