Hiking The Trail
What is the Buckeye Trail?
The Buckeye Trail, marked by its iconic blue blazes, stretches over 1,450 miles, winding through 47 counties across Ohio. From peaceful farmland to bustling urban trails and awe-inspiring natural wonders, every section of the trail offers a unique experience. As you hike, the trail's changing atmosphere reveals a new side of Ohio—through its landscapes, people, and stories. This diversity is what makes the Buckeye Trail so special.
The History of the Buckeye Trail
In 1958, a visionary named Merrill C. Gilfillan, a wildlife biologist with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, shared his dream of a ‘Buckeye Trail’ running from Cincinnati to Lake Erie in a Columbus Dispatch article. This dream sparked the creation of the first 35 miles of trail in Hocking County, and the rest is history! Today, the Buckeye Trail connects Ohio's communities, landscapes, and adventurers, thanks to that original spark of inspiration.
How can I hike the Buckeye Trail?
You might first encounter the Buckeye Trail by spotting one of its signature blue blazes in a favorite local park or scenic destination like Hocking Hills. The Buckeye Trail weaves its way through 100 towns, 18 state parks, national forests, and so much more—making it feel like you're walking across the heart of Ohio. It’s not just a wilderness trek; it’s a journey through Ohio’s parks, towns, and communities.
For your next adventure, start in one of Ohio's beautiful metroparks, state parks, or Trail Towns. The Buckeye Trail is divided into 26 Sections, each with its own character. Use the Section Overview Map to find a nearby section, then explore hikes, Trail Towns, and more on each Section Page.
Finding Your Way on the Buckeye Trail
Stay on track with Buckeye Trail maps and guides, available in both electronic and printed versions. Because the trail is constantly evolving, always check for Map Updates and Trail Alerts before you head out. These will let you know of any permanent route changes or temporary disruptions, ensuring a smooth hiking experience.
How is the Buckeye Trail split up?
The Buckeye Trail is divided into 26 Sections, each named for a feature or town within that section. Each Section is then divided into smaller Segments, generally about 30 miles long, with Points marking the start and end of each Segment. This system makes it easy to plan your hike, whether you’re taking a short stroll or aiming for a longer trek.
Day Hiking the Buckeye Trail
Day hikes on the Buckeye Trail come in all shapes and sizes, from peaceful strolls to all-day adventures. Some hikers break up their journey into multi-day hikes, returning to the trail day after day while using a car or shuttle to reach campsites or local accommodations. However you choose to hike, the Buckeye Trail is ready for your next adventure.
Backpacking the Buckeye Trail
For those seeking a deeper adventure, backpacking on the Buckeye Trail offers endless possibilities. Whether you're spending just one night under the stars or planning a long section hike, parts of the Buckeye Trail overlap with both the North Country National Scenic Trail and the American Discovery Trail, offering a truly immersive experience.
Hiking the Entire Buckeye Trail
Completing the entire Buckeye Trail, known as a Circuit Hike, can be done all at once as a Thru-Hike, or over time with Section Hikes. Many hikers take years, even decades, to finish the trail, savoring each unique part. If you complete the full trail or the smaller Little Loop, you’ll earn a coveted BTA Patch. The BTA Circuit Hike Group also gathers monthly, hiking together towards their goal of completing the trail. Check out our list of Buckeye Trail Finishers and get inspired to start your own journey!
