Tree with blue blaze

National Significance. Local Roots.

The Buckeye Trail is a 1,450-mile loop that winds through every region of Ohio—from the scenic overlooks above the Ohio River to the shores of Lake Erie. Marked by our iconic blue blazes, this footpath connects cities, small towns, forests, farmlands, important historical sites, and state and Cuyahoga National Park.

Whether you’re up for a day hike or dreaming of a full thru-hike, there’s a section for every pace and passion.

What Is the Buckeye Trail Association?

We’re a nonprofit, volunteer-powered organization that maintains, protects, and promotes Ohio’s longest trail. Since 1959, we’ve built not only a trail but a community of outdoor lovers across the state.

Follow the Blue Blazes

The trail is marked with simple 2″ × 6″ blue paint marks, guiding you along the route. One blaze means you’re on track. Two? There’s a turn ahead.

Emma “Grandma” Gatewood—legendary hiker and founding BTA member—joined the trail’s first hike in 1959. She knew Ohio’s forests were worth fighting for. Today, we continue that legacy.

The forest is a quiet place and nature is beautiful. I don’t want to sit and rock. I want to do something.
